Every department has a different AI policy and its chaos
I teach a required first year writing course that pulls students from every faculty on campus and the AI policy chaos is genuinely something else. My engineering students tell me their department openly encourages using ChatGPT for coding assignments and even some technical writing. My humanities students in the same room tell me their department treats any AI use as an automatic academic integrity case, no exceptions, no partial credit conversation, straight to a hearing. And then theres my course, which technically falls under a totally separate policy since its a general education requirement, so I’m the third different rule these same students are trying to track in one semester. I had a student ask me point blank last week which policy actually applies to her since she’s a computer science major taking my humanities coded writing course, and honestly I didnt have a confident answer. This cant be good for anyone’s actual learning if students are spending more energy tracking which rules apply where than thinking about their work.
