Gave ChatGPT my rubric and 30 student essays, here’s what happened
ran an experiment over the weekend that i wanted to share since im still processing the results honestly. fed chatgpt my exact essay rubric, four criteria, five point scale each, then ran all thirty of my grade 10 persuasive essays through it one at a time asking for a score per criteria plus brief justification. i had already graded all thirty myself over the previous two days without looking at the ai scores first. compared the two sets afterward. on about twenty of the thirty we landed within one point of each other total score, which honestly surprised me. the other ten had bigger gaps, and almost all of those were essays where the writing was technically competent but kind of soulless, the ai tended to score those higher than i did. i think its because my rubric rewards voice and originality in ways that are hard to quantify and the ai defaults to rewarding correct structure and mechanics instead. not planning to replace my own grading with this but its an interesting sanity check tool, especially for catching essays where my own score might have drifted from fatigue by essay twenty five.
