Letting students grade their own drafts against a rubric using ChatGPT first
tried something new this unit, before submitting a final draft students run their essay through chatgpt with a prompt asking it to assess against our actual class rubric, then they write a short reflection on if they agree with the ai feedback and what theyre changing because of it. fascinating to see which students pushed back on the ai feedback versus accepted it uncritically. about a third of the class disagreed with at least one point the ai made and explained why in their reflection, which honestly showed more critical thinking than some of their actual essays did. planning to keep this as a standard pre submission step going forward. curious if anyone else has built ai feedback directly into their process like this rather than treating it purely as a threat to police.

@Megan Stewart happy to, i basically pasted the rubric verbatim and asked it to score each criterion with a one sentence justification, then asked students to respond specifically to the justifications rather than just the scores.
the critical thinking angle here is the most interesting part to me. having students evaluate ai feedback rather than just receive it seems like a much more useful skill for the world they're entering than either banning the tool or letting it grade unchecked.
worth watching for kids who just agree with everything the ai says to avoid extra work on the reflection. might need to require at least one disagreement point to keep the reflection honest rather than performative.
@Frank Cloutier good call, adding a minimum one disagreement requirement next round, that closes an obvious loophole i hadnt considered.
