Parent teacher night and every second question was about AI
had parent teacher night last night and WOW did the AI questions come out of nowhere. i expected the usual grade questions and instead got parent after parent asking things like ‘is my kid allowed to use chatgpt for homework’ and ‘how do you even know if they cheated.’
one dad asked me point blank if i thought ai was going to replace the need for kids to learn to write at all. i did NOT have a prepared answer for that one, kind of stumbled through something about critical thinking still mattering.
honestly it was kind of great though? parents are clearly thinking about this and want guidance, they’re just not sure who to ask. made me realize we probably need some kind of one pager for families, not just a policy buried in the student handbook nobody reads.
anyone have a good parent facing AI resource they’ve actually used and would recommend?

Log In to ReplyYES this is such a good instinct, Wendy. our school made a simple one page FAQ two years ago, just plain language answers to the top five questions parents actually ask, and it cut down on a ton of these on the spot conversations at parent night. happy to share the format if it helps, its nothing fancy, just clear.

KEVIN YES the one pager idea is SO smart, we tried something similar and parents were genuinely relieved to have something concrete to read instead of guessing. more schools need this honestly.

one pagers help but they don't answer the real question parents are asking, which is if writing still matters. that answer has to come from the teacher, not a handout.

@Kevin Thompson please share the format, i want to build one before our next parent session! @Ethan Roy you're right that the handout can't replace the actual answer, but it might buy me time to think of a better one than i had on the spot last night lol.
YES this is such a good instinct, Wendy. our school made a simple one page FAQ two years ago, just plain language answers to the top five questions parents actually ask, and it cut down on a ton of these on the spot conversations at parent night. happy to share the format if it helps, its nothing fancy, just clear.
