PhD committee split on AI-assisted lit reviews
Defending my proposal in a few weeks and ran into a weird split on my committee. One supervisor is totally fine with me using AI tools to help organize and summarize the fifty plus papers in my lit review, says its no different than using citation management software to speed up mechanical work. My second supervisor thinks any AI involvement at the lit review stage undermines the whole point of demonstrating I’ve actually engaged with the literature myself, full stop, no exceptions. I’m caught in the middle trying to write something that satisfies both without feeling like I’m doing double the work justifying my process to two people with opposite views. Has anyone else hit this kind of split committee situation, and if so how did you resolve it without it turning into a whole thing at your proposal defense? I dont want this to become the focus of the defense instead of my actual research question.
