TAs using AI grading tools, should departments allow it
I TA a first year course with 240 students and grade essays basically every week of the semester on top of my own coursework and research. A fellow TA mentioned she’s been using an AI tool to do a first pass on grammar and structure feedback before she adds her own substantive comments, says it cuts her grading time almost in half and the students still get the same quality of feedback on content and argument since thats still entirely her own read. Our department has zero policy on this either way, its just not addressed. Ethically I keep going back and forth, on one hand the professor is the one accountable for grades not me so maybe it doesnt matter how I get to my comments as long as they’re accurate, on the other hand it feels like it should at least be disclosed to whoever’s paying my wage that part of the labour is being automated. Anyone’s department actually written a real policy for TAs on this? Would love to know what a reasonable one even looks like before I bring this to my supervising professor.
