Caught a student submitting a purchased essay, AI wasnt even involved
funny how everyone talks about ai cheating now but this week i caught good old fashioned contract cheating, a student bought an essay from one of those paper mill sites. turnitin actually flagged it correctly, matched almost word for word to a database entry from a similar site. ive been using turnitin since 2008 and this is honestly the first case in two years that wasnt an ai question, it was just plain old paying someone else to write it. felt almost nostalgic honestly, at least this one was straightforward, no gray area, no argument about false positives, just a clear match. anyone else still seeing this kind of cheating or has ai basically replaced the paper mill business model at your school.

trust the technology, same admin that cant unmute on zoom suddenly has strong opinions about detection algorithms.
seen both still happening at my school, honestly the mix has shifted but paper mills havent disappeared. the kids who used to pay for essays now sometimes use ai instead because its free and faster, but not all of them made the switch.
@Andrew Singh thats probably fair, i think i just noticed it more this week because it was such a clean case compared to the usual mess of trying to prove ai use.
funny how we built entire new policies around ai panic but the boring old cheating methods still work fine and barely get discussed anymore. wonder why that is.
paper mills never went away. ai just gets all the attention because its newer and scarier to admins.
