Communicating AI concerns to parents who don’t speak English fluently
Parent teacher night last week did not go the way I planned. I had a parent come in with her daughter translating for her because she wanted to understand why her kid’s essay got flagged for AI use. Trying to explain the concept of an AI detection percentage score through a 14 year old translating in real time was rough, a lot of nuance just doesnt survive that process and I could tell the mom left more confused and worried than when she arrived, she kept saying ‘so my daughter cheated’ and I kept saying no thats not what this means but it wasnt landing. I dont have interpreter services on demand for parent teacher night, just whoever the student brings. Anyone found a better way to handle this? I’m thinking some kind of simple one page handout translated into our top languages that explains what a flag means and doesnt mean, so I’m not building the explanation from scratch live in the moment with a kid stuck in the middle translating something they probably dont fully understand either.
