False positive on a grade 9 essay and the student is devastated

2

a grade 9 student in my class got flagged at 82% ai probability on an essay she clearly wrote herself, i know because i watched her write parts of it during class time on days she was absent from other classes and came to mine early. she’s been in tears since i told her, keeps saying no one will believe her now.

i already believe her completely, i saw her write it. but the flag is now part of the record and i don’t know how to actually clear this from whatever system tracks it, or if i even need to beyond just telling her its fine.

this is my second year teaching and i genuinely don’t know the right protocol here. do i need to document something formally to protect her if this ever comes up again, or is a conversation with her and a note in my own records enough? she’s 14 and this is clearly the biggest thing that’s happened to her this school year and i want to handle it right.

document it, even briefly, dated note with what you observed and the conversation you had with her. its not about bureaucracy, its about protecting her if this ever resurfaces, say if she has a different teacher next term who pulls up an old flag without context. a paper trail that says 'teacher observed original writing, flag reviewed and dismissed' takes two minutes and matters a lot down the road.

25 years in and this kind of moment still gets to me every time. what she needs most right now isn't a protocol, its to hear clearly and repeatedly that you believe her, that the tool was wrong, not her writing. Tanya's documentation advice is right and practical, do that too, but don't let the paperwork become the main thing you focus on with her. the reassurance matters more at 14 than the record does.

@Brooke Tessier this made me tear up a little honestly. talked to her again this morning and made sure she knows i believe her, no hedging. documenting it today too like Tanya suggested.

@Brooke Tessier this made me tear up a little honestly. talked to her again this morning and made sure she knows i believe her, no hedging. documenting it today too like Tanya suggested.

document it, even briefly, dated note with what you observed and the conversation you had with her. its not about bureaucracy, its about protecting her if this ever resurfaces, say if she has a different teacher next term who pulls up an old flag without context. a paper trail that says 'teacher observed original writing, flag reviewed and dismissed' takes two minutes and matters a lot down the road.

25 years in and this kind of moment still gets to me every time. what she needs most right now isn't a protocol, its to hear clearly and repeatedly that you believe her, that the tool was wrong, not her writing. Tanya's documentation advice is right and practical, do that too, but don't let the paperwork become the main thing you focus on with her. the reassurance matters more at 14 than the record does.

document it, even briefly, dated note with what you observed and the conversation you had with her. its not about bureaucracy, its about protecting her if this ever resurfaces, say if she has a different teacher next term who pulls up an old flag without context. a paper trail that says 'teacher observed original writing, flag reviewed and dismissed' takes two minutes and matters a lot down the road.

25 years in and this kind of moment still gets to me every time. what she needs most right now isn't a protocol, its to hear clearly and repeatedly that you believe her, that the tool was wrong, not her writing. Tanya's documentation advice is right and practical, do that too, but don't let the paperwork become the main thing you focus on with her. the reassurance matters more at 14 than the record does.

bookmarking this whole thread. had a similar situation brewing with a student right now and wasn't sure how to handle the emotional side of it, not just the paperwork side.

@Brooke Tessier this made me tear up a little honestly. talked to her again this morning and made sure she knows i believe her, no hedging. documenting it today too like Tanya suggested.

document it, even briefly, dated note with what you observed and the conversation you had with her. its not about bureaucracy, its about protecting her if this ever resurfaces, say if she has a different teacher next term who pulls up an old flag without context. a paper trail that says 'teacher observed original writing, flag reviewed and dismissed' takes two minutes and matters a lot down the road.

document it, even briefly, dated note with what you observed and the conversation you had with her. its not about bureaucracy, its about protecting her if this ever resurfaces, say if she has a different teacher next term who pulls up an old flag without context. a paper trail that says 'teacher observed original writing, flag reviewed and dismissed' takes two minutes and matters a lot down the road.
