French immersion parents asking about AI tools in French class

4

Getting a steady trickle of emails from French immersion parents this fall asking basically the same question in different words, is it okay for their kid to use ChatGPT or Google Translate to help with French homework. A lot of these parents dont speak French themselves, thats often the whole reason their kid is in immersion in the first place, so they cant really judge their kid’s work for accuracy and are looking to AI tools as a way to check homework at home the same way they might check English homework. I get the instinct completely but a tool doing the actual translating defeats a huge part of what immersion is supposed to build, which is the kid’s own internal French processing, not a translated final product that looks right on paper. I’ve been answering these emails one at a time with basically the same explanation over and over and I’m wondering if anyone has a cleaner way to frame this for parents who genuinely dont speak the language and are just trying to be involved and supportive.
