Paraphrasing tools are getting way more sophisticated this year

anyone else feeling like the paraphrasing tools kids are using got a whole lot better since last spring? i teach grade 10 english in an ontario board and used to be able to spot quillbot output from a mile away, the weird synonym swaps, the sentence structure that never quite made sense. this fall its different. i had three essays this week that read smooth, natural, proper transitions, but something about the voice felt off compared to their in-class writing samples. ran one through originality.ai and it flagged moderate ai probability but nothing conclusive. i think theyre chaining tools together now, ai draft then a paraphraser to smooth it out then maybe grammarly on top to clean grammar. by the time it gets to me its three layers removed from anything i can point to as evidence. curious if other people are seeing the same jump in sophistication and what yall are doing differently this year to catch it, or if were just supposed to accept detection is a losing game at this point.
