Cross curricular AI policy, are we overcomplicating this

0

our staff has been debating a cross curricular AI policy for six weeks now. six weeks. for a policy that’s supposed to be one shared document across departments.

every department wants its own carve outs. science wants ai allowed for data analysis but not lab reports. english wants it banned for creative writing but allowed for research essays. math cant decide what ‘assistance’ even means for problem sets.

feels like we’re trying to write one policy that satisfies conditions that genuinely contradict each other across subjects. maybe the answer is we shouldn’t have one shared policy at all, just a shared set of principles and let each department write its own specific rules underneath that.

anyone’s school actually pulled this off successfully, one policy across every subject? or did you land on principles plus department specifics instead?

principles plus department specifics, obviously. ban doesn't work, redesign does, and a redesign that ignores how differently ai actually functions across subjects is doomed before it starts. six weeks arguing for one document that satisfies contradictory needs was never going to work.
