Differentiated AI assignments for mixed-level ESL classes

my ESL block this semester has kids ranging from basically beginner to almost fully fluent all in one room, which is normal for us but makes any kind of blanket AI assignment policy pretty useless. I’ve started tiering the actual AI expectations by level instead of just tiering the content. My beginner students are allowed to use translation and AI grammar checking freely since just getting a coherent sentence out is the goal right now. My intermediate students can use AI to check their work after a first draft but not to generate ideas or sentences. My most advanced students follow basically the same no-AI-for-drafting rule as my mainstream English classes since they’re close to grade level anyway. Its more bookkeeping for me to track who’s on what tier but it feels way more honest than pretending one policy fits a kid whos been in the country three months and a kid whos nearly ready to exit the program. Curious if anyone else tiers by proficiency level like this or if theres a cleaner system out there.
