Group project dynamics when international students pair with domestic
Noticed some real tension building in a group project in my grade 11 class. Groups of four, mixed intentionally so newer international students are paired with domestic students, which normally works fine for building relationships. This time one of the domestic students in a group flat out told me she didnt want to submit the group’s report because she was worried her international groupmate’s section would get the whole group flagged for AI use since his written English sometimes reads a bit stiff and formal. It turned an assignment into a whole unintended lesson in bias I didnt plan for. I ended up letting groups submit sections separately with names attached instead of one combined document so no one felt like they were carrying risk for someone elses writing style, but it kind of defeats the point of a group project being a shared product. Anyone navigated something like this without breaking the actual collaborative spirit of the assignment?
