International student transfer credits and AI-screened transcripts

anyone else seeing this? i work with international student applications at a college in Ontario and we’ve started getting personal statements and supplementary essays flagged by AI detection software before they even reach the admissions committee. the tricky part is these are often students who wrote the essay with help from an ESL tutor or ran it through Grammarly for grammar polish, not students who used ChatGPT to generate the whole thing. the flat, formal sentence structure that a lot of ESL writers use naturally is apparently triggering the same patterns as AI generated text. i had a student from Vietnam last month whose essay got a 78% AI probability score and honestly reading it myself i could tell it was genuinely hers, just written in the careful, slightly stiff way a lot of second language writers produce when theyre being extra careful with grammar. we ended up having her do a supervised writing sample to prove it was her voice but that felt unfair, like she was being punished for being careful. curious if other advisors or teachers writing reference letters for international students are running into this and what you’re doing about it.
