Ontario still hasnt released province wide AI guidance and its September in two weeks

checked the ministry website again this morning, still nothing formal on ai use in classrooms beyond the same vague statement from last year about academic integrity being important. meanwhile the board next door over in quebec has actual cegep level guidance for ai in coursework. every school in my board is basically writing its own policy in isolation right now, which means a kid who transfers schools mid year could go from a full ban to open use of chatgpt with zero warning. rural boards especially are just guessing because we dont have the same curriculum consultant staffing that bigger boards have. is anyone else in ontario actually seeing movement on this or are we all just improvising again this year.

dumb question maybe but does any province actually have this figured out? because from where i sit in rural ontario it feels like everyone is improvising, some boards just have nicer looking documents while they do it.

quebec cegeps are ahead mostly because the language question forced the issue earlier, french language integrity and ai use got tangled together fast so the ministry had to respond. i wouldnt call it solved though, just further along than ontario.

no provincial guidance means no provincial liability. thats probably part of why its slow.

@Chris Demers thats a genuinely bleak way to put it but i think you might be right. easier to let every board absorb the risk individually.

i sit on our board's cross departmental committee and the honest answer is provinces are waiting to see what happens at the federal and international level before committing to written guidance, nobody wants to publish something that looks outdated in six months. in the meantime individual boards that have library or ed tech consultants are drafting their own frameworks and sharing them informally between boards. if your board doesnt have that role, it might be worth pushing admin to borrow one from a neighboring board rather than starting from scratch.
