Our library built an AI literacy unit for ESL students, sharing what we learned

0

our school library ran a three session AI literacy unit specifically designed for our ESL students this fall, separate from the general digital citizenship unit we do for the whole school. wanted to share how it went since i know a lot of ESL supports get built as an afterthought to the general version rather than designed intentionally from the start.

we focused less on ‘how AI works’ technically and more on practical things, how detection tools can misread non native writing patterns, how to keep records of their drafting process in case they’re ever flagged, and honest conversation about when using translation or grammar tools crosses into territory that might look like undisclosed AI assistance.

feedback from students was really positive, several said it was the first time anyone explained the detection risk to them directly instead of just telling them not to use AI without context. happy to share our session outline if any other libraries want to adapt it for their own ESL population.

this is exactly the kind of proactive support that should be standard, not the exception. the point about students never having the detection risk explained to them directly is huge, so much of this anxiety comes from students not understanding why they're at higher risk in the first place, just being told rules without reasons. would love your session outline.

THANK YOU for actually building this instead of just bolting ESL content onto the general unit like an afterthought, which is what most schools i've heard of do. this should be the model.

i'm still fairly new to teaching AI literacy content at all and this thread is teaching me things i didn't know to even ask about, like the drafting record point. going to bring this idea to our own library.

will put together the outline and share it by end of week. glad this resonated, it took some convincing to get buy in for a separate session at first but the student feedback made the case for us.

this is exactly the kind of proactive support that should be standard, not the exception. the point about students never having the detection risk explained to them directly is huge, so much of this anxiety comes from students not understanding why they're at higher risk in the first place, just being told rules without reasons. would love your session outline.
