Should first offense AI use get the same consequence as repeat offense plagiarism
working through a revision of our academic integrity policy this month and stuck on a specific question. right now our policy treats first offense ai misuse identically to first offense traditional plagiarism, same consequence ladder, zero on the assignment plus a meeting with parents. but ive started to wonder if these should be treated differently given how much confusion still exists among students and even some staff about what counts as acceptable ai use in the first place. a kid who copies a paragraph from wikipedia knows exactly what theyre doing. a kid who used chatgpt to help outline an essay when the policy language on outlining was genuinely ambiguous is in a different situation entirely. curious how other schools have structured their consequence ladders for ai specifically versus traditional plagiarism.

Log In to Replyagree with the split in principle but worth saying the educational conversation approach only works if its actually educational and not just a lighter punishment in disguise. ive seen schools soften consequences without actually teaching anything, which just delays the real conversation to the second offense.
@Natasha Ivanov thats the part im most worried about getting right, making sure the educational track has actual substance and isnt just a slap on the wrist that teaches nothing.
a few boards ive looked at for comparison built the educational track around a required reflection meeting with the department head plus a specific resource on ai policy the student has to review and sign off on, not just a conversation. having a concrete deliverable attached makes it harder for the track to become a hollow formality, and it also gives you documentation if a second offense does happen later.

two tracks. clear intent standard. simple enough to actually implement consistently across a whole staff.
